The TV Land Awards: A Celebration of

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., March 3 -- TV Land bestowed special tribute
awards tonight to some of television's most-celebrated series at the
network's inaugural awards show, The TV Land Awards: A
Celebration of Classic TV. The honored shows included The
Dick Van Dyke Show (Legend Award), All in the Family
(Innovator Award), Star Trek (Pop Culture Award), Julia
(Groundbreaking Role Award), and American Dreams (Future
Classic Award). The TV Land Awards was taped at the Hollywood
Palladium and will air on TV Land and Nick at Nite: Wednesday, March
12 (9:00-11:00pm ET/PT).

The full-blown homage to classic television featured some
unforgettable moments such as when Academy Award-winning actress
Halle Berry presented Diahann Carroll with the "Groundbreaking
Role Award" for Carroll's role on Julia.
Acclaimed actors Matthew Perry and Ted Danson teamed up to
present Dick Van Dyke, Mary Tyler Moore, Carl Reiner, and
Larry Matthews with the "Legend Award" for The
Dick Van Dyke Show.
Academy Award-winner Mira Sorvino presented William Shatner,
Leonard Nimoy, Nichelle Nicholas, and James Doohan with the
"Pop Culture Award" for Star Trek.

wins "Future Classic Award." |
Academy Award-winner Kathy Bates presented Rob Reiner and Sally
Struthers with the "Innovator Award" for All in
the Family, and Paula Abdul presented Dick Clark and the cast of
NBC's American Dreams with the "Future Classic
Award."
Other memorable moments included an opening medley of Sally
Struthers and Rob Reiner singing "Those Were The Days;"
Maureen McCormick reuniting with former on-screen crush Davy Jones
to present the "Superest Superhero Award" to Lee Majors (The
Six Million Dollar Man); Ray Charles performing "Georgia on
My Mind;" Vicki Lawrence in character as Mama from Mama's
Family presenting the "Non-Traditional Family Award"
to Bea Arthur (Golden Girls); a hilarious Michael Jackson spoof
starring Gary Coleman; Ja'Net Dubois and a 35-person choir singing
"Movin' On Up," the theme song to The Jeffersons,
and Diff'rent Strokes cast members Gary Coleman, Todd
Bridges, and Conrad Bain reuniting on stage to present the Award for
"Funniest Food Fight."
The tribute awards presented included the following:
LEGEND AWARD
This award is presented to a television series that has withstood
the test of time and ranks among the most memorable and celebrated
shows in TV history. TV Land honored The Dick Van Dyke Show
as this year's recipient. Acclaimed actors Matthew Perry and Ted
Danson presented the award.
INNOVATOR AWARD
This award is presented to a show that took a chance with an idea
that directly challenged the standard norms of the day. This year's
honoree is All in the Family. Academy Award-winner
Kathy Bates presented the award.
POP CULTURE AWARD
This award is presented to a show that has crossed the line from
television series to pop culture phenomenon. TV Land acknowledges Star
Trek as this year's recipient. Academy-award winner Mira Sorvino
presented this award.
GROUNDBREAKING ROLE AWARD
This award is presented to an actor who changed the course of
television history with a memorable, groundbreaking character. TV
Land recognizes Diahann Carroll's portrayal of Julia for this
year's award. Academy Award-winner Halle Berry presented this award.
FUTURE CLASSIC AWARD
This award goes to the one show that TV Land feels best exemplifies
an emerging classic series that would one day fit its broad mix of
award-winning line-up ranging from the The Andy Griffith Show
to Happy Days. This is the fifth consecutive year TV Land has
presented this award. (The series must have debuted during the
past calendar year). Paula Abdul presented this award.
Also tonight, the network announced the winners of its viewers'
choice poll for a variety of classic and campy categories. Among the
triumphant victors who picked up the precious TV Land statuette
included: Don Knotts for Barney Fife - The Andy Griffith Show
(Favorite Second Banana); Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams
for Laverne DeFazio and Shirley Feeney - Laverne & Shirley
(Favorite Working Stiffs); Lee Majors for Steve Austin in The
Six Million Dollar Man (Superest Superhero); Barbara Feldon for
her role as Agent 99 in Get Smart (Hippest Fashion Plate --
Female); Bea Arthur for Dorothy in Golden Girls (The
Quintessential Non-Traditional Classic TV Family); David Cassidy for
Keith Patridge in The Partridge Family (Hippest Fashion Plate
- Male); and Cheryl Ladd of Charlie's Angels, Bernie Kopell
and Gavin McLeod of The Love Boat (Most Amazing Cast
Cross-Over).
Beginning in December 2002, TV Land asked viewers to log-on
to tvland.com and vote for a bevy of fun and unique categories with
the winners to be announced and presented at the TV Land Awards: A
Celebration of Classic TV. The voting on tvland.com concluded on
March 1 with over 1.5 million votes cast nationwide.
