Tuesday, November 22, 2005:  Episode #8: "How's that Face Feel?"

Previously on The Amazing Race, five families set out from Costa Rica, where Tony Paolo struggled to stay afloat. But at the detour, he was singing another tune. Then the Linz family took the lead back to the United States. And the Godlewski were left behind. But a lucky break landed the sisters first in Phoenix, Arizona. The families raced super carts at the roadblock. And the weavers were nervous. But Linda stepped up so her children didn't have to. The Godlewski kept their lead and arrived first, while the Bransen family got lost and finished last. But this was a non elimination round. The next morning, families took flight. Brian Paolo
Starting Order
1st Godlewski
5:45am
2nd Linz
3rd Weaver
4th Bransen

struggled with the task. Then the Paolo’s lost direction. Along the way, Weavers annoyed the Godlewski. At the watery detour, Linz family took a strong lead. But a mistake put their lead in jeopardy. Then the Godlewski put them in their wake. Winning their second leg in a row. The Paolo’s fought to the finish. But ended up in last place. Now four families remain. Who will be eliminated next?

The Godlewski family, who were first to arrive at Lake Powell, depart at 5:45 A.M. They must drive themselves to Monument Valley, Utah, this spectacular landscape was made famous in 1940 movie westerns. Once there, they must find a point called John Ford's point to receive their next clue. The Godlewski family makes their way to the vehicle. They have to go out of their way to get gas and there seems to be some tension between Chris and the others, she talks constantly and drive the others crazy. Following behind are the Linz family at 5.46am, Weaver family at 6.06am and Bransen family at 6.27am.

Making their way to John Ford Point, the Linz, Weaver and Godlewski families pass the turn off without knowing. The Linz family being in front, end up further away. They ask directions and have to turn around. The Godlewski girls work it out and try and turn around in the middle of the road. A task not easy when towing a camper. The Weaver family sees them attempting to turn around and manage to find a section in the road and turn their vehicle first and pass the girls.

The Weavers are first to arrive at John Ford Point. All teams must grab a number for their next task. The Weavers read the clue. Teams must choose two family members to ride in a helicopter and be taken to the summit of Elephant Butte, a towering rock in the middle of monument valley. The helicopter has room for two teams as a time. It's first come, first serve. At the top of the butte, teams will find their next clue.

Two teams take the first flight, the Weaver and Godlewski family. Once back, they read the next clue. Teams must now travel 180 miles to Moab, Utah, and find the geological rock formation known as Gemini bridges to find their next clue. The Weaver family has no problem navigating the camper out of the parking place. The Godlewski girls have trouble again. The Linz family set off on their helicopter flight. The Bransen Family has yet to arrive.

The Weaver, Godlewski and Linz family are on the road. The Linz family catch up and pass the Weaver family. Once they arrive at the next destination, they get their next clue. It’s a Detour and they have a choice between two tasks. Here, they have to choose between ride down or drop down.

In ride down, teams choose bikes and travel a six-mile course into the canyon to find their next clue. In drop down, teams must clear a two-stage rappel, 270 feet down into the canyon.

Arrive Detour
1st Linz (Drop)
2nd Weaver (Ride)
3rd Bransen (Drop)
4th Godlewski Drop)

Once they arrive at the bottom, they have to follow this marked path to find their next clue. The Linz family chose Drop while the Weaver family chose Ride. One of the Weaver daughter has some trouble with the bike, while the Linz family really enjoys repelling down the cliff. image Part 1 [15 minutes]

The Linz family get their next clue. Teams must now travel 52 miles to Green River State Park in Utah, where they'll be spending the night. The departure time the next morning depends on the order in which they arrive. The arrival order at the park Linz, Weaver, Bransen and finally the Godlewski girls. The Weaver family stick together during the night as they feel like outcasts with the other teams.

Find Bart
1st Linz
2nd Weaver
3rd Bransen
4th Godlewski

Departure the next morning, the Linz family gets the clue first. Teams must travel 20 miles to Heber city, Utah and find Bart. What teams don't realize is that rather than searching for a human, they're looking for an animal. Bart the bear, an 1,100 pound trained grizzly who is waiting to give them their next clue. The Linz family takes in the scenery while the Weavers complain about Utah. Once the Linz family find Bart, (Bart makes a big impression on all the teams) they get their next clue.  Teams must now travel to park city, Utah, and find Utah Olympic Park, home to the 2002 winter Olympics games. Once there, they'll need to search for their next clue. Caution there is a yield ahead. The Godlewski girls are arguing again and all the animosity is aimed at Chris.

The Linz family is first to arrive at the Olympic Park and decide to yield the Weaver Family. Who are actually lost on a scenic route because of taking another road and are in last place anyway. Comments made by one of the Linz family, “We will be yielding the Weaver family. Because they're behind us and it'll give us a good separation. Hopefully get our first-place spot like we've been wanting.” Once they yield the family, they get the next clue.

It’s a roadblock only one person may perform. In this one, they must put on skis, ride a 60-foot ramp, and do a ski jump into a pool of water. After their flash down, they receive their next clue. The Linz family finishes the task and set off to the pit stop as well as the Bransen family. After the Godlewski girls are done, the Weavers have still not arrived to complete the task. The next clue is the pit stop.  They must now drive themselves to the center of salt lake city and make their way here, City Library, featuring one of the most beautiful views of the city, this building is the pit stop for this leg of the race, the last family to check in here, may be eliminated.

The Weavers arrive at the Roadblock with Mc Donald's in hand and decide to make a picnic out of their yield.  They knew that they would be yielded by one of the two teams they have a problem with.

Back with the Linz family, they need to get directions from someone as to where the library is while the Bransen family relies on their map.  It's a race between the Bransen and Linz family.

The Linz family finally comes on first followed by the Bransen and Godlewski families. The Weavers come in last place, but Phil informs them this in a non elimination leg of the race. He comments, “I would have to say that's the most unenthusiastic reaction to a non elimination in the history of The Amazing Race. Mom Weaver explains, “ Nobody likes us anymore. It's like us against them.” After Phil tells them he is taking all the money and possessions from them he says, “I don't see a real hunger in your eyes.” Mom Weaver, “We had a hunger, we've come.” Phil gives them a pep talk and it seems to lift their spirits. Mrs. Weaver tells us, “I was ready to be eliminated. When Phil give us words of encouragement, it gave me life. We can come back from. This being yielded twice and being lost in a mountain and then coming back from it, that would be amazing. We're not ready to stop now. We’re ready to win.” image Part 2 [6 minutes]
